Representatives from Benjamin/Beechwood LLC, the partnership responsible for building the Arverne by the Sea community. The Y formally introduced themselves to the Rockaway peninsula this week when they hosted a reception at Arverne by the Sea. Y executives, along with Rockaway’s elected officials, celebrated the project’s commencement in an evening that was marked by the unveiling of the building’s official name, the “Rockaways YMCA at Arverne by the Sea.” The long-awaited facility is currently under construction and is expected to open in 15 to 16 months, according to a statement by Arverne by the Sea project Manager Gerri Romski.

Once open, the Y is expected to bring more than 200 jobs to the area; both full-time and part-time. In several months the Y will choose an executive director to begin the process of getting the facility ready for operation come late winter 2013. Hiring is expected to start about six months before the official grand opening.
