Action Center Opens Two New Locations

The Action Center celebrates a decade of service to the Rockaway community by opening two new Afterschool centers.

The Action Center for Education and Community Development Inc. one of the oldest non-profit community leaders in the Rockaway’s welcomed over100 kids into its latest project; The OST EPIC Enrichment program. (Monday Oct 24th.)

Located at 1858 (site of the old Spoonful Restaurant) and 1854 Cornaga Ave the programs which are funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) will provide Karate, Piano, Drums, Pen Pals, Virtual Sports, Geography, Homework time, Story-writing and Telling, Computers and much more.

According to Executive Director Aria Doe,. The beauty of being in the community for a decade is that some of the students who have started with us in middle school, have now graduated college and come back to work in the Action Center program and give back to the community. In fact over 70% of Action Center staff for the new programs are Rockaway residents. Doe goes on to say the majority of the students come from PS 106 and PS 253 who currently do not have afterschool programs, and PS 215 which has an OST program but had a waiting list of students that the Action Center is now able to take on. The Action Center prides its self in the fact that through its T.V. shows, workshops, seminars and community programs they have provided services over the last decade for over 44,000 families and nearly Rockaway 5,000 youth. We look forward to the next decade. There were 107 slots available for the Action Center OST EPIC Enrichment Program, which have all been assigned, however Parents can still apply but will have to go on a waiting list for seats to open up.
