Roller Hockey Teams Compete At Rudden Tournament
With the Rudden and Steiner families in attendance, and in perfect weather conditions, eight teams competed last weekend in the 9th Annual Ryan Rudden Memorial Roller Hockey Tournament. The competition was stiff with teams from all over the tri-state area.
After round robin play was completed, the elimination round started. It was narrowed down to the semis with Ryan’s team facing a team representing Staten Island and last year’s champs, the Possums, facing a young Metro Moose team. Ryan’s team and the Possums fought hard, but the S.I. team and Metro Moose advanced to the finals.
The young Moose team proved to be too fast for the S.I. team, capturing the title by a 4-0 score. The tournament had by far the most talented group of teams. Ryan was a great kid and, as evidenced by the show of support, he is missed dearly and will never be forgotten. A special thanks to Boardwalk Bagels for donating the food; your generosity is greatly appreciated. Also special thanks to The Blackwater Inn for hosting the after party on such short notice. Thanks to Vinny, Bobby and Pat, your help makes this tournament run so smoothly and is greatly appreciated. The tournament would also like to thank the Metro Moose for sending two teams.
With the blessing of the Rudden and Steiner families, the proceeds from the tournament were donated to 9-year old Philip Califano, who is battling an inoperable brain stem tumor. Next year is the tenth year of the tournament, and the organizers are looking to do it bigger and better. See ya next year, Billy.
