RWA Kids Plant Trees Along B. 59 Street

Throughout the summer local youth took part in establishing a community improvement district along Beach 59 Street. The Tree Corps Project is a pilot program to improve the street through better maintenance of street trees along the Beach 59 Street beach to bay corridor.

In September RWA continued the project by selecting seven local high school students from a competitive interview process to serve after school as paid interns for this project throughout the academic year. The students have trained in tree stewardship with Gina Baldwin of Queens Botanical Garden and landscape architect Billie Cohen.

Each week the students begin their work at Firehouse 59 where they set out in teams to work along the 10 block radius of Beach 59 Street. Local residents have been enthusiastically coming out to help as they see the students mulching and watering the trees. Many people in the neighborhood have been encouraged by the project and have taken to improving their own gardens and yards along the route.
