Pumpkin Festival

On a beautiful Sunday, Oct 9, the Rockaway Point Firehouse, under the direction of Eddy Valentine, threw a fun pumpkin party for all to enjoy. There was face painting and pumpkin painting, a haunted house and hayrides on the fire truck, while they served hot dogs, punch, coffee and delicious homemade cup cakes. It was a fun day in the sun. Danny Krause, who is a friend of my son, Kevin Matuozzi, and cousins, Bobby and Patty Crowley were there.

Donald Ritter, owner of the only apparel shop in Breezy Point, which is open all year round with oodles of items from furry flip flops, winter hats to warm you up in cool or cold weather, Breezy Tees and sweatshirts, bathing suits, skate boards, sun glasses and, if you forgot a birthday or Xmas remembrance you are bound to find a suitable gift in the Surf Shop. Donald’s going to help you keep your spirits up by including a selection of wines for the holidays.

A short distance away from the Surf Shop is Kennedy’s on the Bay Restaurant. I first strolled to the bay beach to take in the glorious view of the sailboats and motorboats and families taking their last dip in the tranquil waters. I met Noreen Doherty, who came from Belle Harbor to take her last swim of the season, who showed me her unique technique of getting out of a wet bathing suit right on the beach in a very discreet way. She has it down to a science. I marveled at her putting on a strapless summer dress as she wriggled out of her wet bathing suit. Noreen is a retired teacher at PS 17 in East Harlem. She is a active senior member and remembers when she was an extra in the Alley Cat with Tony Randall and Al Pacino. Her friends Mike and Martha Darby and their children Mike, 15 and Kristen, 20 stopped by to say hello to her. Before I left Breezy, I made my usual visit to Kennedy’s Restaurant and it was a busy day. Tom Neary was at the bar. He just got off from babysitting his grandchildren, Victoria, 9 and Giama, 4 (GG and Mimi). He looked exhilarated but I think he needed the drink he ordered.

River Steamboatin is back. In April of 2012 the largest Steamboat ever built, the gracious and elegant grand American Queen will resume her proud role of taking on guests. As you step on board you step into the opulence of the Victorian era. You get a complimentary hotel stay and shuttle to the ship’s port to embark; acclaimed cuisine by Chef Regina Charboneau; afternoon tea; moonlight supper; wine and beer at dinner; Starbucks coffee brewers in every stateroom; elegant casual attire; onboard river historian; showboat style entertainment nightly; swing, big band and Dixieland music; and steamcoaches complimentary if booked by December 31. Agents and media learned all of this at a delicious luncheon at the famous 21 Club at 21 West 52 Street. You can still see the colorful stone Jockeys outside as you turn the block from Fifth Avenue and the celebrity caricatures adorning the walls. Haven’t been there in many, many years and the food is still heavenly. All compliments of the Great American Steamboat Co.

If you enjoy cruising to Europe, Caribbean and places abroad you might consider cruising on the Oceania Regatta with the Ralph Lauren flair of decor throughout the ship; fine cuisine by Chef Jacques Pepin.

The Regatta will take you from Barcelona to Rome; Istanbul to Venice; Athens to Istanbul and other exotic places in the most luxurious and comfortable settings while being extremely pampered. Free Airfare and 2 for 1 cruising per stateroom. It is a very beautiful ship with a homey ambiance.

New technology never ceases to amaze me. Get your IPad ready…. You can now create your own live paintings without paint or brushes. Mix colors, choose textures, print and save or send with Artrage. Just take your IPad equipped with Artrage and you and your children can capture a picture on the spot. All the artists and potential artists are going to love it. Visit art rage.com

Guastavino’s, under the 59th Street bridge, was the site of an International Wine tasting event and though the wine from France and Italy were the finest I did find wines from Oregon to be very tasty, fruity and spicy.
