Unbeaten Beach Channel Leaps Over Madison
The first half for Beach Channel/Channel View against Madison was almost something to forget. The offense wasn’t moving and five defensive penalties against the Dolphins gave Madison a chance to take an 8-0 lead late in the second quarter.
But any first half woes were wiped out in just one play. 6-3 Dolphins wide receiver Henry Adegunle leaped high to catch a pass from quarterback Breland Archbold in the last play of the second quarter.
The touchdown evened the game and gave Beach Channel the momentum to take over. The Dolphins were a different team in the second half and they score the game’s final 22 points to win 30-8 and improve to 4-0 in the PSAL Bowl Division.
“I’m saying to myself it’s a nice drive and all that but it’s all irrelevant if we don’t score a touchdown,” said Beach Channel coach Victor Nazario. “We’re going to have a lot of mismatched with Henry and we were able to take advantage of that.”
The Dolphins looked an entirely different team in the second half. On the opening kickoff, Madison intended to send the ball away from Beach Channel’s explosive sophomore Diequan Underwood.
The ball was kicked to Andre Armstead, who promptly went down the field on a 75-yard touchdown return to give the Dolphins a 14-8 lead.
On a fourth down and four from the Madison 15- yard line, Adegunle snatched an Archbold pass attempt with his outstretched hands, and bowled past three Madison defenders for a touchdown to give Beach Channel a 22-8 lead with 4:06 left in the third quarter.
The Beach Channel defense can not be overlooked. They have allowed only one offensive touchdown in four games, allowing only a Madison 24-yard touchdown pass from QB Berkay Dagbolen to Adeyinka Anofowoshe.
Diequan Underwood recorded two second half interceptions and Javis Black recovered a fumble with 1:20 left in the third quarter to put Beach Channel in the driver seat. Ibraheem Wynn scored a fourth quarter rushing touchdown for the Dolphins.
The win sets up a great matchup of unbeatens with 4-0 Grady visiting Beach Channel at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Homecoming festivities will take part before the game at 11:30 a.m. Far Rockaway Defeated
The visiting Stuyvesant Peglegs scored 17 points in the first half against Far Rockaway and never looked back last Sunday afternoon in a 30-8 victory. Peglegs QB Alen Makhmudov torched the Seahorses defense for 209 yards on 12 of 16 attempts and two touchdown passes to Caelin Kaplan and Ian Chan. Stuyvesant RBWerner Zhanay rushed for 117 yards and had two touchdown runs.
The Seahorses (1-2) gained their lone score in the fourth quarter on an interception and touchdown return for Elijah McKethen. Far Rockaway (1-2) will have a week off and return to PSAL Cup Division action with a game at South Shore on October 15 at 11 a.m.
