Fresh from his return to the United States from the National University of Ireland in Galway, Ireland, Ed will be teaching a Basic Irish Language class at the Knights of Columbus right here in Rockaway Beach.

When asked what the course requirements were, Shevlin told us, “You don’t need any prior knowledge of the Irish language to take this course; all you need is a desire to learn.

This course is going to be a lot of fun for everybody that gets involved.”

This past summer, Shevlin was the recipient of the Fulbright Commission’s prestigious Irish Language Summer Study Award.

The award allowed Shevlin to attend the National University of Ireland, Galway for his second Irish Language immersion course. Studying at the advanced intermediate level, students in this course complete a year of language study which is condensed into a period of one month. Said Shevlin of his recent experience, “It was a very intense course of study. You attend class six hours a day, six days a week. At the end of the school day you return to your host family and speak Irish with them.

Your entire life is conducted through the Irish language.”

In an effort to “Keep the Tradition Alive,” Shevlin has designed an Irish language course that he believes will be a hit with both first time learners of the Irish language and those who may have forgotten what they learned in the past.

“This course is about speaking the language in a friendly setting. We will not get hung up on heavy grammatical issues but will concentrate on speaking with each other. I am going to use many different resources to bring out the best in my students.

We’ll be singing simple songs, engaging in lighthearted dialogues and meeting experienced teachers and lecturers who will visit our class.”

While Shevlin is teaching this Basic Irish language course here in Rockaway Beach, he is also a fifth year student of Irish language at Lehman College where he is studying under Dr. Tomas Ihde and Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant Madeleine Ni Ghallchobhair.

The first class will be held on Wednesday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus. Anyone interested in registering or receiving more information may contact Shevlin at 347-230-4310 or by email at Fenianbiker32@aol.com.
