Dry Cleaner Site Hazardous No More
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has categorized the Dayton Plaza Shopping Center in Rockaway Beach as a Class 4 hazardous waste disposal site, meaning the area no longer poses a significant threat to the public.
The hazardous waste was the result of a long-term misuse and dumping of toxic dry cleaning chemicals from the previous owners of the establishment located inside the plaza. The storefront has been the site of dry cleaners for more than 25 years.
In May 2007, the NYSDEC found contaminants beneath London French Dry Cleaners, located at 85-15 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Plans immediately followed to remediate the site. Through periodic groundwater and soil monitoring systems, the NYSDEC recently made the determination that the site is completely clean and presents no significant health risk to the residents or business owners in the area.
