Kosmos Girls Soccer Wrapup: Teams Win
The Kosmos girls’ U7 Tyche soccer team was defeated last weekend by a very physical Syosset home team. Despite a lot of pushing and very rough play, the girls remained strong-willed. Fallon Ris and Caoimhe Gormley each took penalty kicks, but the opposing goalie saved both balls. Brigit Butler, Caroline McEnroe, Maggie McIvor, Ava Mollaghan and Shannon Tuffy all alternated between defense and midfield as their opponents charged forward.
Mary Comer, Tess Howley and Ariana DiCarlo each had great runs but were unable to get the ball past the goalie. Emily Harkins was as determined as ever despite being pushed and pulled. Jenna Colleran and Lilly O’Neill were steadfast goalies who gave 100 percent effort to save every ball. The girls are still awaiting a win! Maybe next week!
The GU10 Kosmos’ Artemis tied the Plainedge Extreme 2-2 in a nail biting contest at Aviator Sports Complex. The girls played a strong game, keeping pressure on Plainedge the entire game. Even after Plainedge took the lead, Team Artemis never got down. Kaysea Jenkusky was able to blast one past the Extreme goalie to tie the score. The Extreme went up 2-1 midway through the second half.
The Artemis girls communicated with each other and passed the ball, keeping pressure on their opponent. With less than 10 seconds on the clock, Jenkusky stole the ball off a goal kick, and blasted the final shot of the game past the goalie to tie the game. Beth Dunn, Sofia Edri and Nikki Cimino displayed very strong performances in defense.
Midfielders Mollie Abernethy Shannon Neiswenter, Katie Roventini and Katie Hughes all played well, along with a solid performance by Caitlin Mullin as the solo forward. The Artemis goalkeepers, Kathleen Walker and Sydney Colleran, also played a great game.
The GU10 Nikh also played at Aviator against the East Meadow Soccer Club Sky Blue team. The game was dominated by Nikh’s forwards Sabrina McCarthy, Niamh Gormley, Jillian Mc- Cabe and Grace Lanzetta. McCarthy had two scoring breakaways in the first half. Sydney Urban, Taylor Bryan, Noelle Carey, Daniella DiCarlo, Molly Murtagh and Lauren Koenig each play a combination of fullback and wing which offered up an unbelievable defense.
Wingers DiCarlo, Urban and Koenig were powering up the sides and crossed balls in front of the net to McCabe, Devin Ris, Lanzetta and Gormley. Many attempts on goal were made as Sky Blue’s goalie had a tough job Saturday morning. The centers Carey and Bryan broke down the sides and middle, getting the ball also to the forwards and through the Sky Blue players. Molly Murtagh and Shannon Beissel shared the goalie role allowing only one goal to be scored as Nikh won 2-1.
Kosmos’ Atalanta GU12 team won 3-1 over the Syosset Flames. Grace Kane crossed the ball to Maeve Regan, who scored the first goal. Outstanding attacks on goal from Rhiannon Gormley, Maddie McDade, Katie Marquadt and Alex Dadario. A pass from Gormley set up Erin Wallace for the second goal. The defense of Makayla Beehler, Claire Hughes, Maggie Comer and Caroline Kelly cleared the attempts on goal and kept possession for the Kosmos for the game. Another run by Gormley to Regan gave Atalanta their third goal.
On Sunday, away, the Kosmos’ Techno GU13 girls kept their undefeated streak alive by beating Franklin Square by a score of 5-0. The girls maintained total control of the game from the initial kick-off. The scoring for Techno was by Lauren Marten, Maria Di Carlo (two goals), Katie Sammon and Erin Kennedy. Those goals were made possible from passes by Erin Kennedy, Katie Sammon, Molly Breslin, Nicole Gibson and Gwyn McGee. A solid performance in the midfield by Bridget Breslin, Kelly Santiago and Meaghan LaSorsa was also followed by a strong game in defense by Carli Bopp, Allison Tipaldo, Alex Berman and Devin Gavigian.
Goalkeeper Rose Fay only had to make a few saves on the day and made them look easy each and every time.
At Fort Tilden on Sunday, Kosmos’ GU10 Eris took on their rivals Saba/Met Oval, winning the game 4-3. The tightened defense made up of Victoria Catalano, Molly Abernethy, Maeve Murnan, Lauren Koenig and Sabrina McCarthy worked hard to keep Saba away from goalie Emma Baldwin. Saba had more attempts on goal during the first half than the second half.
The game went back and forth, but Eris would eventually pull out the win. Grace Butler, Julia Necka-Huptysiowska, Analiese O’Leary and Jillian McCabe played eagerly as forwards, trying multiple shots of getting that ball into the goal. O’Leary and Butler stopped Saba as they tried to run the ball back up onto Eris’ side.
Midfielders Taylor Bryan, Kristin Green, Sydney Urban and Katherine Savastano attempted to pass the ball to the forwards or worked their way through Saba. The team was happy to have Emma Davey rooting for them on the bench after recently breaking her arm. The team wishes her a speedy recovery.
