Kosmos Soccer Roundup: Artemis Routs Uniondale
This past Saturday, Kosmos’ Artemis girls U10 took to the field for the first time participating in the Long Island Juniors Soccer League and boy, what a game!
Artemis coming to the game with only one substitute completed their first win 7–2 against Uniondale Gacelas. Within the first five minutes, Kaysea Jenkusky scored from the right side, followed by Catherine Lunny scoring goal 2. Beth Dunn continually attacked the opponents’ goal. The fullbacks were on fire as Nikki Cimino, Kate Hughes, Kate Roventini and Molly Abernethy all sent the ball back to the forwards. Sydney Colleran stopped all attempts at goal.
The second half of the game started off a bit shaky with Uniondale scoring 2 goals. Artemis was not allowing this to keep. Fullbacks continually passed the balls to the forwards. Kaysea Jenkusky, Beth Dunn, Caitlin Mullin and Catherine Lunny would each score goals. Molly Abernethy finished up the game by moving forward scoring the seventh goal.
Also, playing Saturday morning was GU12 Atalanta in Bayridge, Brooklyn against the Long Beach Riptides. Atalanta held their ground and playing a tough defense leaving the game 0 – 0.
Nikh GU10 played a tough game at Aviator Sports and Recreation on Saturday afternoon against the number 2 seeded team, Levittown Superonics. At the end of the first half, Nikh was down 1–0. Nikh worked diligently on their defense and brought the ball forward. They had shots on goal, but had no luck as Levittown won 3-0.
The Kosmos U7 Tyche girls had their first away game last weekend in Glen Head. Forwards Mary Comer and Maggie McIvor did a great job controlling the ball. Ava Mollaghan, Ariana DiCarlo and Brigit Butler demonstrated speed in the midfield. Lily O’Neill and Caroline McEnroe took turns protecting the goal. Overall, the girls demonstrated great team spirit but could not defeat the home team.
On a bright Sunday morning, the Rock U7 boys took the field at Fort Tilden against the FC Bellmore PAL Chelsea. The teams were evenly matched and the play was back and forth all game. Bellmore won 3–2.
Following the U7 boys, was Eris GU10 playing a tough game against the Staten Island Alliance. The alternating defense of Maeve Murnan, Grace Bulter, Victoria Catalano, Molly Abernethy and Noelle Carey kept the attempts of shots on goal to a minimum. Emma Davey, Analiese O’Leary, Julia Necka-Huptysiowska and Katie Savastano were the forwards that kept pressuring the Staten Island defense. Midfielders Syd-ney Urban, Kristin Green, Taylor Bryan and Kate McNamara each assisted the forwards with shots on goal. The first half ended 1-1.
The second half of the game brought tension to the field as Staten Island scored their second goal which Eris followed with their second goal from Taylor Bryan. The third goal was scored on a penalty kick by SydneyUrbanwhichgaveErisa3-2win.
The GU13 Kosmos Techno opened their season with a solid performance by a score of 5-1 over Massapequa X-Treme. Techno controlled the momentum from the very start, passing and moving the ball down the wing and across the field.
From the initial whistle, the Kosmos took control and blasted 4 quick goals past the Massapequa goalie. The first goal was scored by Nicole Gibson, who made an overlapping run down the left side, received a pass from Emma Meade, pulled it back to the inside and blasted a line drive ripping the back of the net. Three other goals in the first half were made by Nicole Gibson, Maria Di Carlo and Molly Breslin.
The second half started as the first ended with a quick goal in the first five minutes by Erin Kennedy, assisted by Molly Breslin. The rest of the second half consisted of the girls passing and making runs and controlling the remainder of the game with ball control. The girls had an 18-minute run of control where no substitutions could be made for either team due to their passing and running and utilizing total ball control. The entire team played well to kick off the season.
This week the GU13 Athena girls played in their first NY Club match easily beating the Valley Stream Lady Strikers 8-1 in the opening round. The girls, playing together for the first time, quickly developed a playmaking, pressing attack that quickly lead to the first goal by Maria DiCarlo on an assist from Hayley Urban. The roles were later reversed when Hayley scored off an assist from DiCarlo, who scored four more goals with assists from Molly Breslin and Nicole Gibson.
Lauren Martin, pushed up from the back, had one goal and one assist to Ryan Ward. Inside back Tess Gallagher ended the game with a diving head ball on a cross from Nicole Gibson finishing a perfect game.
Rose Fay played a commanding game in goal, equally adept inside and outside the penalty area, surrounded by a defensive wall of Jackie Gallagher, Carli Bopp and Samantha Rom. Midfielders Gwyn McGee and Gabby Grzegorski attacking on the outside kept the pressure on the Valley Stream defense, providing numerous scoring opportunities.
The GU14 Kosmos Athena posted another win in Week 2 of the Long Island Junior Soccer League with a 2-0 victory over the New Hyde Park Kit Kats. In a very lopsided first half the Athena girls controlled the ball on their opponent half of the field for all but a few minutes.
The first goal was scored by new recruit Samantha O’Brien who scored in the opening minutes of her first Kosmos game on an assist from playmaker Hayley Urban. Hayley later scored the second goal on an assist from Samantha Rom, who was knocking on the door with long outside shots before being sidelined with an injury.
Kelly Davan, back in goal for the first time this season, was confident around the goal area and cleared any long ball that was sent to her area by the opposing team.
