Arf-Arf Announces Grant, Contest
ARF-ARF is proud to announce that it has received a 2011 New Yorkers for Better Neighborhoods Award Grant from the Citizen’s Committee for New York City. These awards are given annually and this year, out of the nearly 400 applicants, ARF-ARF was among 175 recipients. The organization is using this money to obtain a storage container for Freeway Dog Park, which will hold supplies for cleanup, among other items from their wish list. They will be designing and painting a dog themed mural, which will add to the beauty and uniqueness of the space. The painting is tentatively scheduled to coincide with the fall “It’s My Park Day!” on October 15.
An idea for one side of the container has already been conceptualized, but the other side is still in need of a design. ARF-ARF is hosting a design contest aimed at children in grades K-6. The theme of the contest is “Spending Time with My Dog is Good for Me Too.” The focus of the design must feature a healthy physical activity that you and your dog can do together (e.g. – hiking, running, etc.). There is increasing evidence that the health benefits of owning a pet are increased when both dog and owner are active together. ARF-ARF hopes that while coming up with a design and researching activities, children will also learn that keeping their dogs healthy and active will be fun and healthy for them as well.
The winning piece will be the inspiration for the design of one side of the container, and the winner will receive an animal themed prize pack. Both digital and hand made designs will be accepted. Each entry must include the child’s name, age, address, and phone number at which a guardian can be reached. Entries must come from residents of the Rockaways or Broad Channel in grades K-6. All submissions must reach ARF-ARF by October 1. Please mail entries to PO Box 930272, Rockaway Beach, NY 11693 or e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org . Call 917-903-6518 for more information.
