With the addition of four new teams, licensed coaches and experienced trainers, the Kosmos are raising soccer on the peninsula to a new level, participating in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), the NY Cup, the Just Say Soccer League and the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League.

This past Saturday, the Rockaway Kosmos’ Nikh GU10, the first Rockaway team ever seeded into the LIJSL ultra-competitive first division, played the HBC Red Bulls at Soccer Park in Plainview. Despite the Nikh’s strong defense and multiple saves by Molly Murtagh in goal, the Red Bulls slipped one in ending the first half 1 – 0.

Defenders Lauren Koenig, Taylor Bryan, Danielle DiCarlo and Sabrina McCarthy shut down the HBC attackers in the second half. Forwards Noelle Carey, Jillian McCabe, Katie MacNamara, Niahm Gormley and Maggie Murphy pressed the attack trying to make a comeback. With just three minutes left to the game, Sydney Urban volleyed a corner kick from Grace Lanzetta over the defenders into the back of the net ending the game in a tie.

Kosmos’ Atalanta GU12 also made their first appearance in the LIJS League on Saturday in Division 5W, playing the Floral Park Gunners. Rhiannon Gormley assisted in Hannah Harkins’ goal ending the game 1-3.

The Kosmos’ U7 Tyche girls had their first season game on Sunday against Locust Valley BSC at Fort Tilden. All of the girls demonstrated tremendous sportsmanship and drive. Shannon Tuffey, Emily Harkins and Cioamhe Gormley exhibited excellent ball control in the forward position. Tess Howley and Kelsey Price maintained the midfield, and Jenna Colleran was a strong force behind the defense. Fallon Ris did an amazing job protecting the goal and letting in just one goal. The girls lost 1-0 but are excited for their next game and the rest of the upcoming season.

The Kosmos’ U7 Boys kicked off early Sunday morning against Mineola. Nicholas Abernethy played a very strong half as goalie, followed by Henry McNamara. Sean Hanley, Randy Koenig, Owen Ryan, Jack Ryan and John Leahy pressed the Mineola boys having all attempts on goal saved by Mineola’s goalie. Defense of Ben Lindon, Collin Mullin, Joe Jenkusky and Jonathan O’Leary helped keep the ball clear of their side.

Mid-afternoon, the new third girls’ U10 team, Eris, in the Bronze Division of JSS, met up with Hewlett Lawrence girls’ team. Maeve Murnan saved multiple attempts on goal, allowing only one to get by her in the first half. Defense played by Julia Necka Huptysiowska, Emma Meade, Sabrina Mc- Carthy and Taylor Bryan kept the Kosmos’ forwards very busy trying to even out the score.

A corner kick by Sydney Urban crossed in front of the goal allowing Emma Baldwin a beautiful shot on goal, leaving the first half 1-1. Kristen Green, Analiese O’Leary and Grace Butler were strong forwards, keeping the ball on their opponents’ side most of the game. During the second half, Kate McNamara saved an attempt on goal by their opponent, returning the ball to her forward, Emma Davey. Victoria Catalano and Molly Abernethy led the defense during the second half, cutting down Hewlett’s forwards.

Emma Baldwin, playing goalie the second half, did not allow any attempts on goal and what a punt! With only minutes left in the game, Taylor Bryan scored, ending the game 2-1, Kosmos.

The U8 Girls’ Nemesis team kicked off their 2011 season late Sunday afternoon, playing the Carle Place Frogs. The girls were down 2-0 in the first half despite numerous offensive drives toward the goal by Jillian Kelly, Makayla McLaren, Isabella Edri, Viviana Moore and Claudia Kelly. The first half defense, Olivia Stack and Lauren Kelly, played strong and Paige O’Neill held off other attempts at goal by the opposing team. The girls started the second half very strong, with a terrific goal by Molly Danaher. Shannon Davey, Brooke Leahy and Maggie Wallace did a great job on the defensive line. Keira Price was able to hold the Frogs in the second half with several saves as goalie. With less than a minute to play Sammie Ostrander scored the final goal of the game to tie it up at 2-2.

This week the GU14 Kosmos Athena made their debut in the fifth division after last spring’s undefeated season in the sixth division. The girls, battling a much larger Levittown Breakers team, got off to a tremendous start. The girls quickly took the lead when Morgan Koenig headed the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick on an assist from Rory Kirk. Hayley Urban widened the lead, aggressively charging a rebounding shot from Ryan Ward and putting it past their startled keeper.

Before the first half ended, new recruit Aleksandra Necka-Huptysiowska put another rebound from Hayley Urban into the back of the net for the final goal. The Athena girls played an intense playmaking style, controlling the ball and quickly passing around the field. Wings Gabby Grzegorski, Samantha Rom and Shannon Rochelle applied intense pressure to the bigger Breakers’ defenders, preventing clearing long balls while midfielders Jackie Gallagher, Gabby Breen and Megan Hanning pressed up the attack into the opponents’ half of the field, supported by defenders Allie McGuire, Tess Gallagher and Amanda Dosher, who deftly defended any fast breaks. Goalie Kayla Tacopino easily handled any breaking attacks, tallying five saves.
