CYO Soccer 2011 Fall SeasonWeek 1 Game Recaps
It’s back to school and back on the soccer pitch for the young athletes in our town. Teams representing St. Francis de Sales took on competitors from parishes across the borough beginning just last week. A couple of the senior class teams won their season openers:
The sixth grade girls enjoyed a decisive victory over Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, 5-0.
The first half was evenly played, but Lindsay DeBoer found the back of the net first, off an Elizabeth Clarke pass. Goalie Sinead Gallagher made several excellent saves to keep the score 1-0 at the half. SFDS exploded in the second, with Katie Barrett sneaking in a pair of goals from the back door. Jessica Morelli dominated the midfield and tallied a goal of her own, after receiving a beautifully placed cross from Meagan Duffy.
Angelina Meringolo sealed the victory when she was able to chip in a loose ball right in front of the net. Jessica Buckley and Hannah Nicholson were awesome on defense thwarting all OLBS attacks.
SFDS’ sixth grade boys – aka ‘The Rookies’ – started off their season against Blessed Trinity. Magic Hands Savino took charge of the net, anchoring the fluid end zone patrols of backfielders Joey Morelli, Mario Cimino, Christian Lanzetta, Jack Watt, Danny Lynch and Sebastian Navas- Tobar.
Kyle Hoffman had the hot foot for Sales scoring 3 goals. Midfielders Matthew Coletta and Teddy Stahis each punctuated drives with points.
Rightwinger, John Keehler assisted on one netter and finished one, too.
Dominic Savino and Joey Morelli took parallel paths to good fortune – both moving from defensive zone to forward line, each finding the back of the net. Hard hustling James Carlton, Luca Bartoli and James Munson kept the pressure on Trinity’s goal throughout the game. Sales showed good ball control and strong team work to come up on top with an 8-2 win.
