Hurricane Irene Delays RBVL Awards
On Saturday and Sunday, Hurricane Irene stormed through the Rockaways and halted most activity other than water pumping for the weekend.
The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League had scheduled their annual presentation of championship sweatshirts for Saturday, August 27, but the event had to be postponed while the tropical storm passed over the peninsula. Happily, the weather has cleared and turned beautiful again so everyone can return to their normal daily life, bumping, setting and spiking to their heart’s content.
The RBVL has rescheduled the sweatshirt awards for tonight, Friday, September 2, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Please send at least one representative to the beach at 127 Street to pick up your hard-earned shirts. A net will be set up and volleyball games will be played all afternoon. You and your team are welcome to join in. Bring your coolers and beach chairs and have fun playing some pick-up games if you have time. Or just grab the sweatshirts and run. That’s OK, too.
What’s not OK is not sending someone from your team to get the shirts. The RBVL is not in the sweatshirt storage business and the shirts will be left on the beach if no one comes by. You will probably need a miracle for them to still be there when you finally come over, but that’s your call. Once again, Chris from It’s All Good Tees is working OT to make this all happen on time. Every year he comes through for us and we can’t thank him enough. See you later this afternoon on 127 Street.
Congratulations to the nine champions of the different divisions of the RBVL. They worked hard to get to the top of the pack. Here are the 2011 champs:
Ocean Division- Freedhand’s; Ocean Breeze Division- Dig This; Wave Division Wharf Rats; Beach Division- Miley Home Improvement Crew; Boardwalk Division- Rock Fam; Sun Division- Breakaways; Sun Ray- Sands Point Physical Therapy; Moon Division- White Horse Tavern Beach Posse; Star Division- Rockaway Breakers.
Just because the league is officially over doesn’t mean that the volleyball games must stop. It looks like the weekly Monday night pick-up games at Steve’s 127 Street Stadium will continue for several more weeks. We hope to see many of you on the beach at 6 p.m. if you are available.
And in a short while, Aviator Sports will start up their fall indoor league, in which many of our players take part. As always, if you have any volleyball questions please call Patty at 917-613-0908. Be sure to call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Remember, Patty has a life outside of VB, too. Or just check our website at www.rbvl.com. You’ll find the answers to most of your questions there, not to mention pretty pictures and funny stories. See you on the beach in 2012!
