Hurricane Irene Leaves Darkness, Flooded Streets In Its Wake

With residents either hunkered down behind taped windows and sandbags or at off-the-peninsula locations, Hurricane Irene rolled right over Rockaway early Sunday morning, leaving streets and basements flooded with seawater, trees down and many homes without electricity. This bike is a symbol of the flooding, left abandoned on Newport Avenue and Beach 119 Street. For more photos of the storm, see pages 74 - 77. Photo by Miguel Mercado.
