One of the artworks in ArtSplash 2011, Sept. 10-Oct. 16, RoCA, Fort Tilden. As most of you must be aware, Fort Tilden was officially closed Saturday, August 27, through Sunday, August 28, due to a force of nature with which to be reckoned, named Irene.

However, the Rockaway Artists Alliance and Rockaway Theatre Company, though experiencing a slight blip in their scheduling, continue to roll on unscathed.

RAA’s exhibition “Guardians of the Sea and Riders of the Waves,” curated by Sophia Skeans, has been rescheduled to run this Labor Day weekend, Saturday, September 3 and Sunday, September 4 in sTudio 7, Fort Tilden. Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday 12-4 p.m. Admission is free.

The reception is Sunday, September 4, 4:30-9 p.m.

Last Sunday’s drop-off for artists participating in ArtSplash 2011 has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 4, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Please contact Janet Dever at jettyart 209@yahoo.com if you cannot drop off your work on this date.

The Rockaway Theatre Company’s much acclaimed production of “Crossing Delancey” had to be cancelled for last Saturday and Sunday, but are rescheduled as follows: Thursday, September 8, Friday, September 9, Saturday September 10 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, September 10 at 2 p.m.

The Friday, August 26 performance went off without a hitch.

If you had reservations for the cancelled performances, please call the RTC hotline at 718-374-6400 or go to www.rockawaytheatrecompany.org to reschedule reservations for any of the remaining performances.

Excellent seats are still available for each.

Please make it your business to see this funny, romantic, sweet comedy from playwright Susan Sandler. Director Michael Wotypka and his talented cast and crew have given us a gem.

The ArtSplash 2011 opening event falls, appropriately, on Sunday, September 11 at 1 p.m. in sTudio 7.

Needlework/textile artist Doreen Lynn Saunders will give a presentation of “The Americana Stars Memorial,” a beautiful, colorful fabric art piece that, upon completion, will consist of 50 panels of blue Aida fabric, each panel containing 64 cross-stitched Le Moyne stars (an eight-pointed star) each star representing someone who died on 9/11 and the victims who died in the 1993 bombing of WTC.

The 210-foot wide ‘mural’ honors not just those people, but also the principles of inclusiveness and universality that were part of what fostered this project.

The next performance event of the RAA Writers Group is Wednesday, September 21, 10 a.m.- 12 noon at the Neponsit Day Care Center.

Esther Grillo is a long-standing member of RAA whose work has been exhibited in such prestigious venues as PS 1 Center of Contemporary Art.

She is also a member of 14 Sculptors, whose landmark gallery in SOHO was established almost four decades ago as one of the first galleries specifically devoted to contemporary sculpture.

The group now exhibits in a variety of venues.

14 Sculptors will hold the exhibition, “Head to Toe – Self Portraits,” at Governors Island Art Fair 2011. It is presented by 4Heads and will be located in Building 12, Section E, first floor.

The intriguing exhibit, in the beautiful setting of Governors Island, will be on view from September 2 to 25.

Hours are Friday 11-3 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11- 6.pm.

For the Governors Island ferry schedule: http://gov island blog.com/summerferry schedule.

The ferry is free.

The artists of 14 Sculptors Gallery have created images of themselves. In this intimate indoor setting at the art fair, the sculptors have chosen to reveal parts of themselves, not necessarily, they say, dealing with their likenesses. They “express their individualism in dreams, fantasies and emotion.

With the help of modern materials, past and present merge to give a more psychological autograph.”

Among the artworks in “Head to Toe – Self Portraits” are “Miniature Closet Pieces,” each no larger than 36 square inches, exhibited, literally, in a closet.
