Rockaway Schools 2011 Mathematics Scores
Just as with the English Language Arts standardized test scores published on page 60 of last week’s edition of The Wave, the Mathematics scores are a mixed bag, with some schools gaining from last year, some losing ground. Once again the unifying thread is that everybody is down significantly from the 2009 scores, which embarrassed the state and angered educators to such a degree that the state pushed the cut scores back to where they were in 2004 and 2005, causing a precipitous drop in the number of students who achieved levels three and four, what is considered to be passing the test. At Intermediate School 53 in Far Rockaway, for example, in 2006, only 24.3 percent of the students were at those levels. By 2009, the percentage had climbed to 60.6 percent, and the mayor and his handpicked chancellor were crowing that under his control, the schools had made an amazing growth spurt. Last year, with the cut scores back in a reasonable range, only 18.8 percent reach-ed Levels 3 and 4. This year was even worse, with only 9.4 percent reaching those levels.
