Rockaway Rugby Starts Off Fall Season

By Alan Shaw

Summer is winding down and Rockaway Rugby is starting up. The Fisheads will start open practices this Thursday at Fort Tilden beginning at 7 p.m. All age groups are encouraged to come out and get a run in with the Fisheads.

With dinosaurs like Bob Johnson, Tim “Winger” Kelly and John “Grouch” Mc- Cann leading the way, you are guaranteed to find those chiseled abs lost in beach partying. New players are encouraged to come out and play. Rob “Coach” Palmer has taught and led his high school squad to multiple City championships. “I’ve never been this excited for a season to start up, I am so hyped!” said Coach Palmer.

The team is coming off a great season that ended with a trip to Virginia competing in the Nationals.

The Fisheads represented New York after a solid run last fall. With much talent from around the peninsula returning the team looks to have another strong season. Sightings of Oakie, Dan Lunny, Pat Brady, Trevor Tubbs and Kris Calhoon have current players excited.

Cheerleaders are always encouraged to watch the games. Players who never played the game are more than welcomed, Coach Bob Johnson will make sure you grasp the game in no time. The team will be practicing each Thursday night starting at 7, so if you are looking to get active, this is a great option.
