A Solution To Panhandling

Dear Editor,

I understand the people in Rockaway Park along with the storeowners are up in arms over the panhandling problem. Well, I have the solution. Just say no! If all the generous souls out there would just say no, the problem would go away. Just think, we could start a campaign. All the storeowners there could put signs in their windows that say, “Just say no to panhandling.” They could give away “just say no” bumper stickers. During the holiday season, instead of lights, we could all chip in to put a billboard up on 116 Street that bears the same message.

Most people tell you that they’re homeless or they haven’t eaten in three days. In fact, the majority of them live in the adult homes that dot the peninsula. They get three meals a day, medication, health care, SSI, food stamps, or some other government handout. Plus, a lot of the religious institutions help them as well. They don’t need the money for food.

They use the money to buy booze, cigarettes, and scratch-off tickets. Finally, many of them have family that still look out for them.

All true. If you're going to unload cash, find a worthy charity rather than encouraging the degradation of the Rockaways.
