Chain Snatching Pattern in Far Rockaway

By Miriam Rosenberg

With the price of gold and other precious metals rising, there comes a rise in crime to accumulate jewelry made of those metals, says the commanding officer of the 100 Precinct in Far Rockaway.

Deputy Inspector Michael Lipetri issued a warning to the women of Far Rockaway on Wednesday night, announcing a new and very active pattern of chain snatching in Far Rockaway.

At the August precinct community council meeting, the CO told residents about three snatchings which took place within the previous 24 hours – all by the same suspect.

“He’s targeting females and he’s targeting straight up chain snatching,” said Lepetri. “This individual, he’s targeting the areas around Central and Mott Avenues. As well as the Redfern area.”

Lepetri, who added that the suspect is always on a bike, described the perpetrator as a heavy set, Hispanic male between 25 and 35 years old with a “little darker complexion.”

The deputy inspector went on to say the thief uses such methods as approaching his victim and asking for directions or following the individual he intends to rob.

“We have three [chain snatchings] within 24 hours, which is very concerning” said Lepetri. He later added “it’s very new, but it’s very serious.”
