Small Rainshower Doesn’t Damper Graybeards Run
In a summer that has been highlighted by outstanding weather, Mother Nature chose to remind us of her presence last Friday night at the Ninth Annual Graybeards Family Run.
However, higher intrusion only caused a break in the action as all events were completed and everyone enjoyed a beautiful evening in the St. Francis schoolyard, after over 300 runners took part in the various races. The children took over Rockaway Beach Boulevard with different ages running various distances in a sprint to the finish line. Tommy Ryan broke the tape for the Special Olympians in their inspiring run.
Then the rain came and everyone took cover in the St. Francis gym. Twenty minutes later, it slowed to a trickle and then came to a stop and the evening resumed with the one mile run. Teddy Stathis was first in 6:33 while Lauren Marten was first female 10 seconds later. The 5K race featured a strong pack of runners in the 16-19 age category. Cathedral Prep’s Connor Gallagher blew away the field in a record time of 16:52. Bishop Ford’s Devin Rocks was second in 17:31 and Brian King of Manhattan College followed in 18:37. Mary Gallagher of St. Francis College made it a sweep for her family by taking the Women’s plate in 20:21. Candice Clark was second and Laurel Fisher third. A veteran Graybeard Grill Crew kept the hamburgers and hot dogs coming while Billy Egan manned the beverage station and the kids kept busy with lots of fun rides. The Gray Riders had to set up in the gym due to the storm and played to a select appreciative audience that chose to go back inside after the weather cleared.
