Lifeguards Are Great

Dear Editor,

My husband and I moved to Rockaway 16 years ago. We are both retired and spend many of our summer days on Beach 95 Street. When our friends and family come to visit, they are often concerned about the dangers of the ocean. We assure them that we have great lifeguards.

This past week a young lady visiting our beach collapsed on the sand. Our lifeguards sprang into action. Since I am a poor swimmer, I do not know much about saving someone in the ocean. However, being a retired ER nurse my first instinct in this situation was to help, possibly even take over. There was simply no need for me to do that. I can attest to the outstanding job that was done. The lifeguards followed the proper protocols and used their equipment effectively and correctly, possibly saving that young lady’s life right there on the beach.

The lifeguards on our beach deal with visitors from all over the city. Many do not listen and often get themselves into trouble. Without hesitation our lifeguards run in and save them, often they receive little or no thanks yet they climb back up on the chair and continue protecting the beach.

I just wanted to acknowledge the excellent job that is done day in and day out by our lifeguards on Beach 95 Street.
