A 60-year old unidentified local man was hit and killed by a speeding automobile as he attempted to cross the dangerous Cross Bay Boulevard from the northbound to the southbound bicycle lane just after 9 p.m. on Tuesday night, police say.

According to police sources, the man was riding his bike on the northbound bicycle lane in the vicinity of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Sanctuary when he decided to cross the four-lane boulevard and return to Rockaway.

Eyewitnesses say that there were several other bicycle riders with him.

Crossing the boulevard, he was hit by a 2011 Acura driven by Jonathan Rincon, 21, of Howard Beach, who was traveling northbound on the boulevard.

According to eyewitnesses, Rincon was travelling at high speed when he hit the bicyclist.

Police and EMTs responding found the man unconscious and unresponsive. He was transported to the Peninsula Hospital Center where he was declared dead on arrival.

Rincon was arrested for driving with a suspended license.
