Swimming Serenely, Suddenly Rescued
An unidentified man was swimming along the oceanfront at Beach 126 Street at about 6:45 p.m. on July 30 when he noticed a police helicopter above him and lots of people on the shore, pointing in his direction. It took him a minute of two to realize that all the attention was because he was about 50 yards from shore and swimming nearly an hour after the lifeguards went off duty. As the man turned and pulled for shore, followed closely by a fire department boat, the word went out that a second man, wearing a red bathing cap, had been spotted in the water as well. It took only a minute for the police helicopter to identify the red cap as a dive float. Nobody was hurt in the incident. Photo by Howard Schwach.
