A few hundred people from Rockaway and from :pcal 1199 of the Healthcare union came out in support of Peninsula Hospital Center (PHC) on Wednesday night despite the rain, all in hopes of finding a way to save their much-needed community hospital from extinction within the next month or so.

It was announced last week that PHC plans on shutting its doors and has submitted a closure plan to the state.

The rally, organized by health care union 1199 SEIU, took place adjacent to the hospital in a parking lot. Union delegates and local politicians were on hand to talk to the community about working together to find a solution to keep the hospital open. Despite the rain, the rally was well attended with a mix of PHC employees and residents joining together. Several PHC employees took turns steeping to the microphone to tell the elected officials why it’s necessary to keep their hospital open for business.
