The Champs Are Here: SFDS Playoffs Begin


Teams in the SFDS Grammar Junior Division. Teams in the SFDS Grammar Junior Division. The calendar has turned to August and the playoffs approach in the St. Francis Summer Classic. In fact, the first two champions were crowned and got to don their long-sleeved tees.

Graybeards Night began with Brian King selected as MVP as Gray beat Blue for the Legends championship. Terence Mullin then took the honors as his White squad cruised past Gray. Scores won’t be mentioned to protect the innocent.

In Girls Grammar Senior play, Belle Harbor Yacht Club closed out regular season action 7-1 to take top seed for the playoffs, which began this past week. Kimball Construction took second place at 6-2 followed by The Wave (6-2), Belle Harbor Chemists (3-5), T. Moriarty & Son (1-7) and Walsh Management Services (1-7). The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, August 9 at 7:00 p.m.

Curran’s Superior Meats leads the Boys Grammar Middle at 5-2. Boarders is 4-3, Rockaway Jetty 4-3, Station Liquors 3-2, Plum Tomatoes 3-3, Kill, Wood, Ace & Mann 2-3, Rockaway Little League 2-4, and Storage Place 2-5. Playoffs begin with quarterfinals on Monday, August 8. Semi-finals are Wednesday, August 10 and the championship is Tuesday, August 16 at 7:00 p.m.

The Graybeards are atop the Boys Grammar Senior division at 6-1 with the Irish Circle close behind at 5- 1. Walsh Properties and the Melons are 3-2. Cyberzone is 2-4. Ameritag and J & E Industries are 2-5 and Kennedy’s is 1-6.

Quarterfinals are Monday, August 8 and Tuesday, August 9. Semifinals are Wednesday, August 10 and the championship is Thursday, August 18 at 7:00.

JG Electrical Installations remain in first in Boys High School with a 4-1 record. The Orangemen and Dr. Schilling’s PODs are 4-2. Coastal Real Estate is 3- 3. BRS Bullets dropped two to fall to 3-4. The Grayriders are 2-3, Breen Electric 2-4 and Belle Harbor Physical Therapy 1-4.

Quarterfinals are Monday, August 8 and Tuesday, August 9. Semifinals are Wednesday, August 10 and the championship is Tuesday, August 16 at 8:15 p.m.

In Girls High School, R. Tyne Painting remains undefeated at 3-0. Animal Hospital of the Rockaways is 2-1. Walter Blum’s Giants are 1-2 and Betty Boops are 0-3. Play continues through Monday, August15 with semifinals Wednesday, August 17 and the championship on Thursday, August 18 at 7:30.

The Women’s Open is headed toward playoffs with Bungalow Bar at 5-2, Jameson’s and Harbor Light 3- 3 and Irish Circle and Boardwalk Bagel 2-4. Semifinals are Tuesday, August 9 with the championship on Tuesday, August 16 at 7:30 p.m.

In Men’s Open, Quigley Insurance is still undefeated at 5-0. ICAP is a surprising 4-1 with perennial powers Belle Harbor Steakhouse, Caiazzo Plumbing and Rock Park All-Stars 4-2. Ludwig’s Caterers are 3-2, and Beauty Parlor and Bungalow Bar are both 3-3. Slices and Ices is 2-3, Only Shirts and Pants 2-4 and Jameson’s 1-5. Irish Circle continues to look for their first win at 0-5. Quarterfinals are Monday, August 15, semifinals are Wednesday, August 17 and the championship is Thursday, August 18 at 8:15.

Boys and Girls Grammar Junior and second grade divisions will finish their seasons this week. Their games have been marked by improved play throughout the season, highlighted by a 50-49 nail biter this past Monday in Boys Grammar Junior.

The playoffs are here and the 27th Summer Classic is heading to an exciting close. Organizers encourage the public to come on over to the schoolyard to check out the action.
