Undergoing Renovations

By Miriam Rosenberg

Six years after its last renovation, funding has been appropriated for improvements to Lanett Playground at PS 197 on Beach 8 Street. Last month the city approved $2,440,000 for the construction of a comfort station that, according to Jill Weber, the Administrator for Parks and Recreation in Rockaway, was the community’s primary request. In addition, the playground area will undergo reconstruction.

Requests for bids are currently out and due back the beginning of this month. Following the selection of a contractor, construction should start this fall or early next year. “We’re going to work in phases with the school so they could use the yard while we are doing the comfort station,” said Weber.

“When we are ready to do the asphalting of the schoolyard the school will be notified so they can have a different scenario for line-up.” Funding for the project is being shared by the city and state.
