Presently on view in the ‘backyard’ of sTudio 7 is “The Gallery Green,” that marries summer outdoor fun and creative artistic flair. In a setting that celebrates the energy and pleasures of summer in the out-of-doors, RAA has set its first-ever mini-golf art exhibit.

Designed by community artists, “The Gallery Green” takes you on a fanciful journey through the arts, education and more. Adults and children are invited to play a game on the course. Come for the sun! Discover your heart in the arts!

“The Gallery Green” is open to the public Saturdays and Sundays 12-4 p.m.; Thursday evenings 5-8 p.m., through September 4 in sTudio 7, RoCA at Fort Tilden.

The annual RAA barbeque/picnic will set the air with the smells of ‘Rockaway’ summer on Saturday, August 13, 6-11 p.m., in and around sTudio 7 Gallery. Bring your own picnic or bring things for the grill, to be shared by your fellow artists, art lovers and BBQ lovers. We welcome charcoal, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, steak, buns; also chips, dips, casseroles, pasta, salads, soda, non-alcoholic fruit punch, …whatever tickles your taste buds as the Rockaway breezes and sounds of the sea accompany an evening of fun, food and friendship.

ARTSPLASH 2011 is the next major exhibit to grace the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA). RAA’s annual juried, multimedia showcase for visual and performing arts will be on view Saturday, September 10 through Sunday, October 16. Opening reception is Sunday, September 18. Deadline for receipt of entries is … better hurry … August 12. Prospectus and entry form are available on the RAA website: www.rockawayartistsalliance.org sTudio 6 Gallery, sTudio 7 Gallery, the outdoor sculpture garden and the indoor and outdoor stages of RoCA will soon be filled with art of all stripes, stars and sounds.

InkSplash will be on view October 9 through November 6. Opening reception is October 9. Now in its third year, the brilliant printmaking show curated each year by award winning printmaker Christian Le Gars will bring to Rockaway the work of some of the finest printmakers in the world. Showcased will be traditional and experimental techniques, often in the same work. Deadline for receipt of entries is September 9, 2011.

Special events during ARTSPLASH will include a very special presentation on September 11. More about that in the next column.

“Guardians of the Sea and Riders of the Waves”: Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28. RAA invites artists and non-artists to bring to life Rockaway beach scenes that portray a moment in time on our peninsula, whether from the past or present. We are seeking vibrant images of lifeguards, surfers and all images that contribute to celebrating the beach life on the peninsula of Rockaway. All art forms are welcome, including but not limited to: sculpture, drawing, painting, video and film, printmaking, photography and mixed media. Also images or objects of Rockaway memorabilia from any era for loan would be appreciated to give life and immediacy to the exhibit. Up to four artworks may be submitted for consideration.

Submission deadline by email: August 7, 2011. email: sophiaskeans@aol.com

Please call 917-306-8729 if you are unable to submit by email.
