Rockaway Walks 2011 Season In Full Swing
It’s “Truly fun in the sun,” said Steven C. McCartney, coordinator of Rockaway Walks, a free community exercise program in its fifth year of existence. The program brings McCartney’s philosophy of smarter workouts and staying active to a whole new level.
Recently, during this season’s seventh week, a record number of residents from Rockaway and neighboring communities of Long Island gathered at Beach 19 and Beach 20 Streets for a one-hour group fitness program that prepares young and old, with proven instructional methods, to rejuvenate and improve motor skills. The goal is to help individuals gain new knowledge from their own experience and to build a stronger community.
The 2011 Rockaway Walks season officially ends August 27. Those interested can still join. The fun gets started at 8 a.m. every Saturday. New participants will receive a free water bottle.
“The Rockaway Walks Exercise Program has made a difference in my Saturday morning activities,” Dorothy P. of Far Rockaway said. “This year is my first year as a participant in the program and Mr. McCartney is a very good instructor. I hope to be back next summer.”
The 2011 Rockaway Walks is made possible through Councilman James Sanders Jr., New York City Parks Department, New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Healthy Lifestyle Changes, Inc., CUNY University Student Senate, Stop & Shop, Modell’s Sporting Goods, Pins & Needle Embroidery, Joseph Addabbo Health Clinic, Peninsula Hospital, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital and The Wave newspaper.
