Middle School Meeting On August 4

By Daniel Solomon

On August 4, at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting about the proposed elimination of zoned middle schools, which will be held at District 27 headquarters, located at 82- 01 Rockaway Boulevard in Ozone Park.

The discussion will be hosted by the Community Education Council, a body of parents elected by the presidents of parent-teacher associations throughout the district, and will inform attendees about the Department of Education’s current plans for “middle school choice.”

Right now, there are two proposals, each of which does away with zoned middle schools. The first would give students priority at middle schools closest to them, while the second would give no one preference anywhere. Both ideas have come under fire by parents throughout the area, with some concerned PTA members at PS 114 threatening to file a lawsuit against the DOE over this issue.

For more information about this meeting, you can call 718-642-5805 or email the CEC at CEC27@- schools.nyc.gov.
