Bridge Truck Fire Seen For Miles

A fire in the rear compartment of a Triborough Bridge and Tunnel (TBTA) truck used to repair roads spewed black smoke so high into the air that it could be seen from miles away. The fire began just after 9 a.m. on Friday, July 15 just north of the toll booth for the Cross Bay Bridge. Firefighters from both city units and the Broad Channel Volunteers responded, blocking off all but one outbound lane of the bridge and causing a large traffic jam on the bridge that stretched from Rockaway to the tolls. The rear compartment of the truck, which reportedly held a tar-like substance, was completely destroyed by the fire. The rear compartment of the truck, which reportedly held a tar-like substance, was completely destroyed by the fire.
