St. Francis Summer Classic Basketball Update
This week, St. Francis would like to introduce you to the Summer Classic coaches while giving a quick update on the action.
JG Electrical Installations is the lone unbeaten team in Boys High School with Richie George guiding the squad. Booby Bruns has Dr. Schilling’s PODs 3-1. Ryan Woerner has a young Breen Electric at 2-1. John Pensabene has returned to the Summer Classic and leads the Orangemen 2-2. Joe Kenel, Brian O’Connor and the Grayriders are the defending champs at 1-2. Coastal Real Estate is also 1-2 with Greg Hearn calling the plays. Joe Courtney and John Ronayne are the best dressed duo on the sidelines but need to rally BRS Bullets from a 1-3 start. The legendary Jack Gordon pulls up the rear with Belle Harbor Physical Therapy at 1-3.
The Girls High School division has now begun and Clare Droesch is coaching the Betty Boops while John Blum handles Walter Blum’s Giants and Chuck and Mary Gillen lead R. Tyne Painting. The coach for Animal Hospital of the Rockaways is still being determined.
Jack Bender’s Graybeards lead the Boys Grammar Senior division at 3-0. Brian Bagley has the Melons 2-1, as does Dan Leary with the Irish Circle. Ameritag with John Glynn and Gerry Walsh and Walsh Properties are 2-2. John Ameruso and Thomas Ryan once again have J & E Industries. Cyberzone and Kennedy’s are both 1-3 with Mike Knott on one and Matt Knott with the other.
Mike Erhard’s Station Liquors sit atop the Boys Grammar Middle at 3-0 with Allison McGovern and Curran’s Superior Meats in hot pursuit. Peter Stathis has Boarders Surf Shop right behind as is Joe Morelli’s Kill, Wood, Ace & Mann. Jeff Colletta’s Plum Tomatoes look ready to break out and Marty Andresen is the dean of all Summer Classic coaches in his 27th year with Rockaway Little League’s team. Guenter Skammel and Duke McCabe are making strides with Storage Place and Rockaway Jetty respectively.
The Girls Grammar Senior has many rookie coaches including Paige Whelan and Bridget Klein for BHYC; Mary Gallagher and Kate Lynch for The Wave; Anjelika Blum joining Patty Gibson for Belle Harbor Chemists and Meaghan Atwood joining Erin Blum with Kimball Construction. Danny Quinn and Jim McCool return with Walsh Maintenance and T. Moriarty & Son.
Joe Featherston leads Moriarty in the Boys Grammar division while Maureen Powderly coaches Buckley’s; Chris O’Keefe coaches McManus Mechanical; Terry Greene-The Greene Machine; Dom Maiorano-VRCTax.com; Billy Hoffman Pro1Tires; John Mullally-Blue Bear Risk Management; and Jamie Agoglia with RAM Abstract.
Agoglia also doubles as the coach of RAM’s Girls Grammar Junior team in conjunction with Matt Courtney. Kris McCann guides Carvel. John Carlin has Ludwig’s Sand-Witches flying as does Felix Gilroy with Flynn & Flynn. Rich Savastano leads Harbor Optics, Rich McDade has Rockaway W.I.S.H., Terrence Mullin coaches Mullin Basketball Camp and Joe Morelli joins Agoglia in double duty by coaching Rockaway Beach Digital + Design.
Phil Hughes’ second-graders are getting their first taste of the Summer Classic on Mondays and Tuesdays in the gym at 5:45 p.m. The Men’s and Women’s Open leagues have been providing exciting fare.
The Graybeards will crown the first two champions of 2011 with the Legends and Young Gun finals on Thursday, July 28. The Ninth Annual Graybeards Family Run is the following night and it is hoped that nearly all participants in the 2011 Summer Classic will take part in the event.
