Bikes On The Boardwalk

Dear Editor,

I would like to comment on the bicycle riders in Rockaway. The boardwalk has become the bicycle run. Now not only must you look out for all of the Parks Department vehicles, the police cars, etc you must be on look out for all of the bicyclists zooming on the boardwalk. I would like to know why was Shore Front Parkway and the Boulevard cut up for bicycle lanes if no on uses them? Also the bicyclists obey no rules either of the road or common courtesy whereever they ride.

This is a quality of life issue for all of the pedestrians trying to enjoy the boardwalk.

My guess--the drivers are

My guess--the drivers are maniacs. Also, while I do--at times--ride a bike on the board walk, I always observe the rules, don't speed and have never even come close to a pedestrian. As a matter of fact, I'm more often one of those who walk, than a bike rider. You're right, there are some abusive cyclists out there. Banning them from the boardwalk would be a poor solution as it is a fine ride. It would be better--I think--to have some sort of clearly marked cycling rules.
