Sanders To Hold Meeting About Mosquitoes

By Daniel Solomon

New York City Councilman James Sanders Jr., who represents the peninsula’s east end, will be holding a meeting on July 27, at 7:00 p.m. to talk about the area’s mosquito problem.

The discussion, set to take place at the Macedonia Baptist Church on Beach 67 Street, will allow community members to voice their opinions on the issue and hear from the Health Department’s Assistant Commissioner of Environmental Health Mario Merlino. The high number of mosquitoes in Rockaway, felt acutely in Arverne,

Bayswater and Edgemere, was noted in the pages of this newspaper recently and has prevented many Rockaway residents from venturing outside their homes in the middle of the day.

Some blame the city for the problem, citing its refusal to perform so-called nuisance spraying, opting instead to only use pesticides if West Nile Virus is detect ed, a policy that the Councilman has opposed. Anyone seeking more information on this topic can call Sand- ers’s office at 718- 527-4356 or 718-471- 7014.
