Police from the 101 Precinct in Far Rockaway, responding at about 12:35 p.m. on June 22 to a call reporting an unconscious man in an unused car lot across the street from 2107 Cornaga Avenue, found a dead man who may or may not have died of natural causes, local sources say.

Patrol units found the man, later identified as Israel Gonzalez, who police say was homeless, lying dead on the edge of the site.

Two years ago, another homeless man was found dead on the site, and locals say that the lot is often used as shelter by homeless men.

Those locals say that the dead man was known only as “Mexico” to those who frequented the lot.

Detectives from the 101 Squad are investigating. Anybody with information is urged to call the detectives at 718-868-3429.

A spokesperson for the city’s medical examiner said that the agency had not yet declared a cause of death and the case is still “pending investigation.”
