Weaver Gets Reprieve From Budget

Sheldon R. Weaver Day Care Center in Redfern has gotten a reprieve from the mayor’s budget ax. The director of the center, Arlene Cauley (pictured addressing parents at an emergency meeting in March to save Rockaway’s day care centers), told The Wave that, “Sheldon R. Weaver has achieved another year extension. We will be open for another year.” It was due to close last month. According to Donovan Richards, the chief of staff for Councilman James Sanders Jr., the councilman fought hard to keep it open. This is the second year the children’s day care center had been on the budget chopping block. Blanch Progressive Day Care Center on Beach 87 Street was not so lucky. It closed last month.
