Kearney Honors Student Athletes At Dinner

This year, Bishop Kearney High School’s Sports Awards Dinner honored winning teams and winning players. More than 300 parents, coaches and members of Kearney’s administration gathered at the Rex Manor to congratulate all those who had taken part in the year’s activities.

The track team was honored for their win in the Cross Country Brooklyn/ Queens Championship. The swimming team was congratulated for winning the B Championships. The cheerleaders were recognized for winning the Shore Showdown championship. The junior varsity softball was congratulated for their taking the Brooklyn Championship, through a rainy spring season.

Special awards presented at the dinner are named for people who have made a significant contribution to the Kearney community over the years. The Sister Geraldine Woods Award for Outstanding Christian Leadership in Athletics was presented to Stephanie Bramante and Danielle Farragher (Belle Harbor). The Erin Quinlan Memorial Award for Outstanding Kearney Spirit in Athletics was presented to Jaclyn Grasso. The Thomas Gannon Memorial Award for Scholarship, Athletic Ability and School Spirit was given to Kim Marino and Nicole Tobin. The Theresa Witty Award – Kearney’s #1 Fan Award — for outstanding support of Kearney’s student-athletes and the athletic program, was given to Nick Trani. The Ed Madden Memorial Award for Outstanding Athletic Ability went to Samantha Retas. Erin Tacopina (Breezy Point) received the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete Award this year for excelling in academics as well as a number of varsity sports. The Susan Burke Award recognizing Outstanding Representatives of Bishop Kearney was presented to Jessica Nunziata and Jaclyn Terranova.

This year, the Deborah Lovett Award was established to honor the memory of the Kearney track coach’s wife, who died suddenly during the year. This award for courage, determination and leadership was presented to John Lovett, Krysta Cosenza, Allison Gasparino, Taylor Raccuglia and Kasey Robertson.

The National Consortium for Academics and Sports, Northeastern University’s Sports in Society, the National Collegiate Athletic Association and National Federation of State High School Associations recognized 11 Kearney students for achieving excellence in academics and athletics, making significant contributions to the community and maintaining a 100%+ average. They included: Marissa DeTorre, Allison Gasparino, Noel Girgenti, Emily Hiltunen, Deirdre Hynes (Belle Harbor), Lauren Marino, Jessica Nunziata, Kristen Perez, Gina Piro, Doaa Shalabi and Erin Tacopina (Breezy Point). Five students were honored for maintaining an average of 98%+. They included: Nicolette Conte, Amanda Duffy, Juliann Emilio, Emily Mason and Christine Nunziata.
