Like all the other Queens libraries, the Far Rockaway Library has faced multiple budget cuts during the economic downturn.

To keep its level of service to the Far Rockaway community, the library has embarked on a series of fundraisers, raising $2,000 last month as it attempts to pull itself out of the hole made by the cuts of the last few years.

Best Buy, an electronics retailer, donated $1,000 in cash to the cause, also providing electronics items – a 19-inch television, a DVD player, a digital camera and an i-Pod – for a raffle which brought in an additional $1,000.

According to Dani Murriel of the Far Rockaway Library, the funds raised will be used to buy new books, DVDs and CDs. She added that fundraising is an on-going effort and the library is still getting donations from area residents.

They are also hoping for donations from other organizations. Anyone interested in making a donation to the library should come in and speak to either Principal Librarian Sharon Anderson or Assistant Librarian Justin Levinson.
