Wounded Warrior Weekend Kicks Off 7/7

The Graybeards are proud to present the seventh annual Wounded Warrior Adaptive Water Sports taking place from July 7 through July 10 in Rockaway and they need your help and support to make the event a success.

The Graybeards are seeking households capable of hosting a wounded warrior for the weekend’s festivities that include the Thursday evening welcoming parade and the Special Olympics fundraiser on Friday. Adaptive water sports will also take place throughout the weekend with the festivities concluding during a 9/11 memorial mass in Breezy Point on Sunday.

That welcome parade will arrive at approximately 5:45 p.m. The route runs through Breezy Point, Rockaway Point, Roxbury, Neponsit along Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and concludes at Beach 126 Street.

After the parade the Wounded Warriors meet their host families who will provide accommodations for the weekend. The adaptive water sports festival enables permanently injured marines and soldiers to participate in water skiing, fishing and scuba diving among other activities.

The Special Olympics fundraiser on Beach 134 Street takes place Friday, July 8. The Wounded Warriors are the party’s honored guest.

Donations are $35 for adults and $5 for children with an accompanying adult. During the fundraiser on Friday night the group will honor all local 9/11 families for a brief tribute during the party to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

For those looking to host a Wounded Warrior or attend the Special Olympics fundraiser, please call the Graybeards office at 718-634-6812.
