Rockaway Express Advance In Kings Bay LL Playoffs
The Rockaway Express advanced in the Kings Bay Little League AAA Division playoffs with a 2-0 defeat of the Gerritsen Beach Tigers at Kings Bay fields on Saturday, June 18. It was a beautifully played defensive struggle as both teams played at a high level.
Starting pitcher James Resker of the Express had a 1-2-3 first inning. The Express jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning as Ian Byrne singled to start the inning and then stole second and third. With two outs, Daniel Sumrall had a terrific at bat before hitting a single to right field to drive in the run. James Resker struck out three more in the third to preserve the lead. The Express added another run as Kieran Conaghan drew a two-out walk and stole second and third. Daniel Greenflashed some speed by legging out an infield hit to make it 2-0. Daniel Green pitched a scoreless fourth and helped himself in the fifth by getting the first out by fielding a ground ball and throwing to catcher James Agoglia, who put a terrific tag on the runner at home.
Thomas Resker came in to relieve with the bases loaded and struck out the next batter. The Tigers leadoff hitter then hit the ball into center field for what looked like a sure run or two, but Express center fielder Matty McDonagh alertly threw it back in to shortstop Ian Byrne for a controversial force out at second.
The Express got two quick outs in the last inning as second baseman Joe Tammaro and first baseman Mikey McManus each made nice fielding plays. Thomas Resker sealed the victory with another strike out. The Express moved on to the next round on June 23 against either the first or second place team.
