Too Much Noise Too Little Help

Dear Editor,

Due to the nature of the letter, if it is to be published – please do not use my name! I live on Mott Avenue, facing Gipson, as I live in the back of the building!

We face the residences up and down Gipson. Yesterday, Friday evening, is not an isolated incidence. One of the homes directly behind 2308 had a party which started about 6:30! The music was cranked up so loud, with the windows closed and the air conditioning on, the music was so loud we could not hear the tv! Finally at 10 p.m. I called the non-emergency number of the 101 Precinct. I was told a police officer would drive by and check. The music quieted just long enough for the officer to drive away. The music escalated after that. I called the police again at midnight, and again at 1 a.m.! I was told by the police that, since it was a private home, all they could do was request the music be turned down!!! I asked if giving a ticket for disturbing the peace was possible – I was told, no!!!!

The music continued until after 3 a.m. Was I the only person who called the police? I don’t know! The noise was unbearable! This was not an isolated incident. This goes on every weekend on Gipson. If not that house, one or two others! Clearly, all these residents think they live alone! That other people on the block don’t have to work in the morning! It is not unusual for one particular house towards the end of Gipson to have a very loud party (which I can hear at the other end of the block!!) Followed by gunshots! Sometimes it is just one weapon, occasionally there is return fire! What is most disturbing is there are never police that respond! The noise alone from the stereos is horrible. It is beyond belief that all these residents think the rest of the neighborhood appreciates their noise. The police do nothing, complaining to 311 does even less. If in Bloomberg City we can be ticketed for looking through our own garbage cans once they are at the curb, why can’t the police ticket folks for disturbing the peace!! Possibly if these noisemakers received tickets that dented their wallets, maybe they would think twice about the noise.!!! There has to be a solution to this, along with many other Rockaway stories just like this one!!!!!!
