Rise In Rent

Dear Editor,

It is not the wicked George Pataki who imposed the current terror upon all New Yorkers who rent apartments. It’s the shameful timidity of Sheldon Silver, the speaker of the house in the New York State Legislature, who allowed rent control to be separated from the House/Senate/Gubernatorial budget deal crafted in March 2011, knowing that a bill with rent justice could not get through the Republicans and Cuomo on its own.

There are still items that the Senate wants badly; there are still items that the Governor wants badly. Silver must state clearly that nothing now moves without the strong protections that renters need.

Included in public announcements by Silver should be the reminder that there are 80 times as many renters in New York State as there are landlords who own apartments lived in by people other than themselves.
