For 15 years, the Littoral Society in partnership with Gateway NRA has been leading sunset eco-cruises in Jamaica Bay given by local naturalists Mickey Cohen and Don Riepe. Over 120 people went on last Saturday’s cruise aboard the “Golden Sunshine” out of Sheepshead Bay and learned about the history, ecology, management and wildlife of Jamaica Bay. Along with wine and cheese, the group was treated to sightings of peregrine falcons nesting on top of Marine Park Bridge and saw many herons, terns, egrets and laughing gulls in the big marshes near JFK Airport.

Aside from viewing wildlife, they learned about marsh erosion, bird strike hazards, habitat management and the history of the bay. The next cruise is scheduled for Sunday, September 25, 4-7 p.m. For information call 718-318-9344; e-mail: donriepe@gmail.com

A favorite event on the cruise is the opening of the subway bridge which allows the boat to enter into the eastern section of Jamaica Bay. A favorite event on the cruise is the opening of the subway bridge which allows the boat to enter into the eastern section of Jamaica Bay.
