Castellano Tests The Assembly Waters
Longtime community activist and former Community Board 14 president Vince Castellano has announced that he may challenge in the coming special election for the Assembly seat vacated last month by Audrey Pheffer.
“Today I am announcing the formation of an exploratory committee to advise me on whether I should seek the position of Assemblyperson for the 23rd Assembly District recently vacated by Audrey Pheffer after 24 years in that position,” Castellano said in a prepared statement. “Many people have confided to me that they are very unhappy with the likely choices in the special election this Fall. The political class is effectively deciding who we can vote for. Is it a surprise that they vote for themselves? Will such people serve the interests of the community or their party?
Because of my 25-year experience in community and business affairs in Rockaway, friends have asked me to become a candidate. But they are my friends. The committee’s job will be to reach out beyond my circle of friends and see if there is wider support for my candidacy.
Much like the decision I faced more than 20 years ago when I was elected Chair of Community Board 14, if I can’t find a candidate I can enthusiastically support, then I will find an alternative.
I believe the political class has ignored the taxpayer. They treat the taxpayer as a dairy cow to be herded and milked. Today they tell us what light bulb to use, what toilet bowl to use and where the bike lanes are. What is next?”
Castellano urges those who would like to work for his candidacy to contact him.
