On Thursday, June 2, the Scholars’ Academy Golf Team faced off against Leon M. Goldstein High School in the second round of the playoffs. The match was played at Kissena Golf Course located in Flushing, Queens. Scholars’ number 1 golfer, Xander McDonald-Smith, won his match 4 to 1; number 4 golfer, Daniel Orlolwski, won his match 5 to 0; while the number 2 and 3 golfer, Ryan McCabe and Max Kempner, respectively, both lost their matches 4 to 2.

This left the number 5 golfer, David Sullivan, on the course playing the eighth hole down 2 to 1. On the eighth hole, Sullivan hit a great drive and a perfect approach shot and parred the hole to his competitor’s bogey. The match was now tied 2 and 2 with one hole to go. Both teams gathered around the ninth green to watch their fate unfold; both players teed off on the long par 3. Both players landed short of the green.

But alas, it was not Scholars’ day as Goldstein’s golfer chipped the ball close to the hole and put it in for an easy par. Scholars’ lost the number 5 match, 3 to 2, and the overall match, 3 to 2. Scholars’ is looking forward to next season in which they will start a PSAL girls golf team in the fall to complement the boys team in the spring.
