Rockaway Express: Road Warriors


Catcher James Agoglia getting the out at home. Catcher James Agoglia getting the out at home. The Rockaway Express had a busy and successful two weeks in the Kings Bay Little League going 5-0. They won 4 games in Brooklyn before coming home to Fort Tilden and winning another. The Express consists of third-graders from PS 114 and St. Francis de Sales. They play in the AAA division which is 10 and under and, despite playing against older competition, the Express are currently in second place at 10-3.

On Thursday, May 19 they defeated the Kings Bay Bulldogs, 8-4, at Kings Bay’s home field. The Express jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by starting pitcher Ian Byrne’s 2 RBI single. Relief pitching sealed the win for the Express as Daniel Green threw 2 shutout innings and James Resker closed out the final inning. Tom Resker had an RBI double in the second inning. Other offensive contributors included Joe Featherston, Brendan Watters, Terrance Marten, Billy Reyes, Mikey McManus and Daniel Sumrall who all had hits in the first and second inning rallies.

The Express then beat MQH (Mary Queen of Heaven) 7-4 on the loser’s field on Saturday, May 21. James “Two-fer” Tuohey stroked 2 solid run producing base hits and made a sparkling running catch in right field. Christian Agoglia led off the game with a walk and scored the game’s first run. In the second, the Express jumped to a 4-0 lead as Tom Resker led off with a double followed by RBI hits from James Tuohey and Philly Benoit. MQH scored a run in the bottom half of the inning, but starting pitcher Tom Resker struck out two to end the inning.

The Express scored again in the third and fourth innings. James Resker scored on a clutch hit to right field by Daniel Sumrall. Next inning, Daniel Green walked and stole two bases before “Two-fer” Tuohey drove him in. Daniel Green relieved Tom Resker in the third and threw two shutout innings, helped by James Tuohey’s catch in right field. James Resker relieved in the fifth to strike out 2 and then kill an MQH rally by throwing to catcher James Agoglia to get the third out at home.

The Express then travelled back to Kings Bay on Tuesday, May 24 to defeat the Kings Bay Warriors 24-6. The 24 runs were a season high for the Express. Jakey Mackoff led the way going 3 for 3 with a double and 5 RBIs. James Tuohey continued his hot hitting also going 3 for 3 with a double, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. James Agoglia added 4 RBIs and a double. Billy Reyes and Brendan Watters each had 2 hits and 3 RBIs and Joe Tammaro and Matty McDonagh scored 3 times each. Daniel Green added a double and 2 runs. Joe Featherston, Mike McManus, Kieran Conaghan and Daniel Sumrall also scored 2 runs each. Mike McManus started the game and threw 2 shutout innings. Brendan Watters closed the game with a scoreless final inning. Matty McDonagh, Brendan Watters and James Tuohey each made nice catches.

The Express were back at Kings Bay on Thursday, June 2 where they defeated the Kings Bay Bulldogs 3-2 in an exciting, well played game. Joe Tammaro drove in 2 runs with a hard hit single. Starting pitcher Ian Byrne was masterful as he struck out 7 in 3 shutout innings. He was aided by a difficult catch of an infield pop by first baseman Mike McManus. James Tuohey pitched the final 3 innings for the Express.

Thomas Resker drove in Daniel Green as the Rockaway boys jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Friday, June 3, against OLG (Our Lady of Grace) Rangers. Philly Benoit pitched 4 strong shutout innings striking out 9 and was helped by a fine catch in centerfield by Billy Reyes. The Express then scored twice in the bottom of the fourth with RBI hits by Jakey Mackoff and Joe Tammaro and twice more in the fifth as Daniel Sumrall led off with a double and scored and Jakey Mackoff collected another RBI hit. Daniel Green pitched the final two innings to seal the victory.
