The City’s Joke

Dear Editor,

After the unofficial opening weekend of summer, Rockaway beaches were left a filthy mess by the visitors who packed on buses, in their cars and on the A train to wreak havoc on our surf and boardwalks before returning home. Packs of unruly teens roamed the streets and sand harassing business owners, and the women and children trying to enjoy the day. What do the local police do about it? They focus on local bike riders and cigarette smokers.

Where was our mayor? He, of course, was out of town on vacation. What was our local Congressman up to? Apparently, he was too busy with his Twitter. Is there anyone out there to stand up for Rockaway residents, or do we have to remain the city’s joke?

MIKE O’NEILL

Like invading hoards--they come--abuse the resources, get drunk and violent, then leave, with a wake of litter as a remembrance. Pure class.
