The eighth grade St. Francis de Sales volleyball team beats St. Aidan’s, the Nassau/ Suffolk champions, in a 2-1 match. The victory for the reigning Brooklyn/ Queens champions came through hard work from the girls and coaching by Craig Carey and Greg Gentile. This team was committed all season long to playing volleyball the way the sport was meant to be played — BUMP, SET, SPIKE!!

This win started with Emma Knox’s tremendous serving and unstoppable power spikes.

Julia Carey followed up with great spikes of her own and sprawling dives across the court. Courtney Blum stepped up wherever she was needed. She moved from libero to setter in the championship games with flawless ability.

Celeste Lynch was amazing to watch with her collegiate spikes. Lisa Pellegrini’s consistent and effective passing when hit with line drive serves was very impressive. Taylor Veigh put needed points on the board with her multiple cut-shot spikes. Finally, Kayla Kilgallen’s ace serving, graceful sets, and consistent passes earned her the MVP of Brooklyn/Queens and Regional Championships.

Four of the team players and their talents were greatly missed the day of Regional Championships. Emma Michael’s athleticism and competitive drive helped the team win all season long. Serena Yenello’s tenacity and great front row playing brought in many points. Cliona Smith was able to consistently dig up spikes from the other teams. Finally, Madison Efron’s improving passing and spiking contributed to the team’s over all success.

Congratulations Girls! Good Luck with your high school volleyball careers and be sure to play a lot of volleyball on the beach this summer.
