Scholars’ Heads To Manhattan

On May 19, the Scholars’ Academy Storytelling elective class took the “road less travelled,” and ventured to the Poet’s House in Battery Park City. The elective is new to Scholars’ Academy this year and has students creating original ghost stories online. What is most unique about this class is that the students comment on each other’s work and have learned a great deal about online etiquette. The Poet’s House was founded by artists who wanted to create a place where writers can work and draw inspiration. The students were welcomed into a modern and artfully decorated building with comfortable couches and sofas strewn all over the floors. There is even a children’s room, complete with antique library cabinets and old typewriters. The “boo crew” was given the task of creating a found poem. They combed through the library and had to find four lines, each from a different poem, and then put the words together. “I learned how to use the words of others and I was inspired by their masterpieces,” said Alessandra Ricciardi. “It is a very relaxing place for budding authors,” added Xiomara Mendoza. “There are many props to let your imagination run wild.”
