Amelia “Millie” Dockstader, 90, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died June 1.
Dockstader was born on April 21, 1921 in Far Rockaway. Along with her parents Saverio and Cristina Laino, she operated a local shoe repair shop for 60 years. The business started in Arverne and then moved to Belle Harbor. She was also a real estate entrepreneur. Dockstader was an active member of Saint Francis de Sales Church as a Eucharistic minister. She visited and brought communion for many home bound parishioners.
Dockstader was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; daughters, Patricia Benecke and Joan Heyen.
She is survived by her son, Glenn Dockstader; sons-in-law, William Benecke and George Heyen; grandchildren, Lisa, Cristina, Dawn, Denise, Cindy and Tracey; and great-grandchildren, Christina, Tyler, Michael, Sophia, Olivia, Brooke, Logan and Olivia.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Donza Funeral Home, East Rockaway, New York. Visitation will take place on Sunday June 5, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will take place at St. Francis de Sales Church, Belle Harbor. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village, New York. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society.
